Holidaying in the Isle of Lewis
The Hebrides is the home of an unique spiritual, civilised culture, the true heartland of the Gaels and the Gaelic language. Hebridean communities are close knit, friendly and safe: more in tune with nature and relaxed and contented with the rhythm of life. People will go out of their way to help you and have the time to be genuinely interested in what you have to say.
The town of Stornoway offers an excellent range of restaurants, pubs and shops. Take a gentle walk through the splendid Lewis Castle Grounds or stroll round the harbour. Stornoways excellent 18 hole golf course is located in the Lewis castle Grounds and welcomes visitors (A set of clubs is available at the cottage if you don't have room to carry your own). The towns leisure centre also welcomes visitors and is excellently equipped with swimming pool, sauna and gym. All within 5 minutes drive of Benside Cottage.
There are many things to see and do on the Island. A visit to Lewis is not complete without a experiencing the awe-inspiring Callanish standing stones. For a glimpse of Island life in bygone days visit the Gearenin Blackhouse village. You will find much more in the information pack provided in the cottage.
The Islands possess many areas of outstanding natural beauty and are ideal for walkers, birdwatchers and cycling enthusiasts. If fishing is your passion then there is an abundance good quality trout and Salmon fishing. Relax on one of the Islands stunning, unspoilt beaches. My personal favourite is Ardroil beach in Uig with it's expanse of clean golden sands. For the more adventurous try surfing, sea-kayaking, climbing, canoeing or sailing or even take a boat trip to the stunning uninhabited Island of St Kilda with it's spectacular scenery and abundant bird-life.
This is just a taste of what's available - there really is something for everyone. For more information visit www.outdoorhebrides.com which provides links to all the activities above and many more or just give us a call and we'll be glad to help.
